Medical Explaination
Rheumatic mitral stenosis (also called Rheumatic MS) is indemic in Pakistan and lower socioeconomic groups. This is a progressive disease with no medical cure, resulting in fusion of the mitral valve leaflets preventing blood flow from entering into the heart. This is caused by a response to a bacterial infection known as streptococcal pharyngitis (also known as Strep throat) in childhood. This causes severe shortness of breath, reduced exercise capacity and ultimately death. Valve replacement is a costly and difficult endevour.

Many patients die being a wait list of over 10 months.

However there is an alternative minimally invasive treatment. With the invention of the Inoue Balloon,
first invented in Japan by Dr Inoue, we are able to open these valves by utilizing a novel balloon by
accessing the groin vein. This allows patients to live a normal life as results of the balloon valvuloplasty
are immediate.  The Inoue Balloon has a high-cost making it unavailable to patients in a lower
socioeconomic groups.
